The Marshall Thundering Herd open up the 2018-2019 season Wednesday on the road against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels.

“We’re going to play hard. They’ll put on a show,” head coach Dan D’Antoni said about his team.

The Colonels finished last season with a record of 11-20 (5-13 Ohio Valley Conference), and return their leading scorer senior Nick Mayo, the 6-foot-9 power forward. Mayo averaged 18 points and just under seven rebounds per game last season.

Marshall finished last season 27-11 (13-5 Conference USA) overall and won the Conference USA tournament, resulting in the team’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 31 years.

The Herd defeated Eastern Kentucky last season at home, 91-71, led by Jon Elmore and C.J...

Marshall on Thursday defeated West Virginia Wesleyan College 83-65, due to proficient inside scoring.

The Herd scored 56 of their 83 points (67 percent) from inside the paint.

The Thundering Herd’s leading scorers were senior C.J. Burks and freshman Taevion Kinsey, scoring 10 points in the win in front of 5,721 spectators.

Senior Fred Bronsted led Wesleyan in scoring with 24 points, 21 coming from shooting 7-for-14 from three.

Defense was the focus of the week in preparation for the game against Wesleyan, likely due to the fact that Marshall gave up 108 points in their previous game against Glenville State on Sunday, also in the Cam Henderson Center.

“That was our first look at a zone (defense), so that helped us out,” Marshall he...

“I call our style of play ‘hillbilly ball.’ When I grew up, you either made the shot or it was going to run down the hill,” D’Antoni said on Jan. 23 of last year describing the Herd’s style of play.

The Herd coach is entering his fifth season for Marshall and the run-and-gun style that he and his brother Mike D’Antoni (head coach of the Houston Rockets) used in their NBA careers is more successful than ever for the Thundering Herd.

Marshall scored 83...
