Isaiah Green Silences Critics in Herd Victory

By Michael Morgan

Led by struggling quarterback Isaiah Green, the Marshall University Football Team defeated Old Dominion University 31-17 on Saturday.

“I’m proud of our players for the way they bounced back,” Head Coach Doc Holliday said. “At the end of the day, we protected the ball and scored when it mattered.”

Green led both teams with 175 yards passing, while adding 59 rushing yards and two total touchdowns.

The offense did not score on the first drive of the game, but Green led the team to a 94-yard scoring drive, finished with a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Devin Miller. Green later increased the Herd’s lead to 14 points on a 17-yard touchdown run with 8:40 left in the second quarter.

“It felt good not turning the ball over and being able to get on them early,” redshirt-sophomore Green said. “I feel like going from throwing three picks (interceptions) last week, this week was a good change.”

Green totaled 460 yards in the loss to Middle Tennessee State University last week, but had four turnovers. His inconsistent play this year has led to some unrest among fans.

“I honestly have not been a fan of Green. Nothing personal, I just do not think he is our (Marshall’s) best option at quarterback, Thomas Tawney, a Marshall season-ticket holder said.

Opinions of people like Tawney, and the popular Twitter page, “BarstoolMU” which ran a poll asking voters whether or not they thought Green should remain the starter, continue to push the narrative of Green not being the best option for Marshall. The poll’s results were 84 percent to 16 percent in favor of benching Green.

Green said this game should have silenced his critics, and in the end, wins are all that matter.

Marshall is now 3-3 on the year and players like Green and Darius Hodge, the redshirt-sophomore that totaled 4.5 sacks in the win against ODU, said that good wins like this are hard to come by, but “all the hard work is worth the sacrifice,” when the team wins.

Hodge said that he was happy his quarterback had a good game, and the team got “back on track” with a win.

Green and the Thundering Herd travel to Florida Atlantic University on Friday to attempt to move to a 2-1 conference record, which would move them into second place.
